Measuring the Strength of the Church
The Reflector – December 2010
Written by: Edward O. Bragwell, Sr.
“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God
hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world,
and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that
are: That no flesh should glory in his presence.” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29 KJV)
Until folks quit thinking of the strength of the local church in terms of large numbers, showcase
buildings, and grabbing community attention with such things and begin thinking of strength in spiritual
terms, the Lord’s cause will not really prosper. Things like a spiritually growing membership, simple
scriptural spiritual public worship and spiritually oriented work, will not be seen as strength by the
carnally minded in or out of the church. The measuring of strength in spiritual terms will truly confound
the wise and mighty of this world. But, it will impress God. Remember that God has so designed his plan for
man so that “no flesh should glory in his presence.”
A spiritually strong church will be busy worshiping God and “seeking and saving the lost” rather than
trying to get into a position to impress the world with its “strength.”
